Great rules to live by! Even if you don’t use the example given these rules should apply to all you SM posts. not only to protect your job but you own reputation and integrity. Be careful what you post and follow these simple rules to maintain your credibility!

When you’re a police officer, you are held to a higher standard. There is no arguing that. If you think it’s unfair, then you should probably find another line of work. If you believe you should be allowed to say whatever you want, then you should really find an outlet other than social media to voice your opinion.

Being married to a LEO and having worked in that field for quite a few years, it’s always been of paramount importance to keep anonymity a big thing. The only reason I’ve become a social media ho now is because I no longer work in law enforcement and the hubby has retired from it. But man, you BETTER keep your opinions to yourself (at least while that uniform is on) or you are just asking for problems. i think it’s something many LEO’s seem to forget when they go into the field. Just like weekends, holiday, and hurricanes, your public opinion is something you have to sacrifice if you are going to be a part of public service. That’s just the way it is and you better learn to deal.

You’re SO right! I think in this case even if he wasn’t a LEO he should be keeping that opinion to himself. There are somethings that truly kept to your “inside voice”. Nobody want to see that stuff on their TL no matter who you are. I think people take for granted how truly public SM can be! The context and tone is very much different for the spoken word versus the written word. Sometimes what people think is their heads as funny and as a joke comes off so wrong and once it’s posted out there is nearly impossible to take back. I think people really need to take a step back and take a few moments before they hit that post button to ensure what they’re written really conveys the message they intended and that it’s not offensive, demeaning or something that will get them in trouble personally or professionally.
