Have you driven to Florida? I need your opinion!

Hey all!

With my family’s upcoming drive to Florida I am looking for your opinion of the best route to get there from Ontario Canada.  I have always entered the US by car via Buffalo.  My first thought was to do that again this time however I’ve been told that the Windsor/Detroit route will be better since it is mostly highway driving.  Google maps says the drive is aprox 1hr faster (negligible I think on a 20hr drive) on the Buffalo route over the Windsor/Detroit route.  There is also the issue of traffic; I’ve heard Atlanta traffic can be horrendous.  The plan is to leave home before lunch stay in a hotel for one night then arrive at Disney before noon the next day.  I am torn!!  I’d love to have your opinion.  Please also add your comments on why you think a certain route is better at the bottom in the comments section.

Appreciate the feedback everyone!

OH! you’ve totally made me reminisce of moving to Daytona Beach. We did that by going through the Michigan border (since Dan has family in/around Detroit). And at the time (1996 – practically before the internet or at least before WIFI phones), I bought a book that told me about what was at every exit along the way. Totally kept me occupied. So which ever way you go, definitely plan out a few options on where you’d want to stay and possibly whats happening at every 4 hours exit. That way if you have the “I’m hungry” or “I have to pee”, you’re covered. Yes, the Michigan way is straight Interstate and the Buffalo way is a bit more “highway”. I guess you might also want to think about what you want to see or how many times you want to stop. Oh and Atlanta (since I’ve lived there too), its not really as bad as you think. I mean, its not busy all the time. Maybe plan on driving through there on non-rush hour times if you take that route. I think its probably a bit better than going through Toronto in rush hour. I don’t suggest taking the by-pass in Atlanta (285) I think it will add too much additional time to the drive (but hey you’ll pass by the exit that leads to our house :D)). I have taken the Buffalo route once and it was fine. I actually seem to remember that there were times I didn’t have great cell service thou (been probably 6/7 years since we did that drive so maybe it has changed). So that was a bit of frustration (man, how did we live before without cell phones?!?!)
