Canada’s 911 Ride

I would like to highlight an event I came across at work.  Its called Canada’s 911 Ride and its a group of motorcycling enthusiasts that organize a ride throughout Ontario raising funds for charities.  The charities they supported in 2011 are The Mikey Network, The Soldier On Program, families of fallen emergency service workers, the family of Cst. Garrett Styles & children of violent crimes.  Last year they raised over $50,000 for those charities and placed defibrillators at : Guelph General Hospital, Stratford Sports Complex, Puslinch Community Center, 2 units in the town of Listowel, Toronto Zoo, Seniors Church Center & Sgt. Ryan Russell’s High school.

I think it would be obvious that this would be an event close to me but why would you want to know about it?  First of all and quite simply public access defibrillators SAVE LIVES!  I haven’t heard of someone yet that has heard a story or had a family member that has been saved by Defib.  In a cardiac arrest the keys to survival are early CPR and early defribrillation.  I’ll save the importance of every single person learning CPR for a future post.  But the more Defibs we can get out there the more lives that will be saved!  So far the Mikey Network has distributed 1200 defibrillators across Canada and Mikey Defibrillators have saved 14 lives.  For the visual people out there here is a map of all the locations they had all been placed.  Second there are thousands or Canadian Forces personnel that put their lives on the line for our freedom and the freedom of others.  Some of them get injured in the process.  I believe we all have a duty to take care of those members when they return.  It can only be a small sacrifice compared to the sacrifice they make for the rest of us.  Third of all they may be travelling through your area and some of your streets may be blocked for a brief period of time.  A minor inconvenience for such a huge endeavor.

So if you happen to be in an area where these bikes are passing though go out, take your kids with you and give them a wave, stop and give them room, don’t complain as your current road is blocked by a police car for a few mins.  They’re out there raising money to potentially save one of your family members or friends lives. 🙂

🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑Well after a little more than 10 months it's time for this little birdie to leave the nest and fly on his own! It's been a long process with many ups and downs. 🙏❤️huge thanks to my wife who was still recovering from major surgery and was basically a single mom right up to Christmas while I was attending the in-class portion. She encouraged me, supported me and kept everything at home and with the kids running smoothly. Then during my clinical and preceptorship phase we had to deal with the illness and eventual passing of her father. There were many times where I needed to be with her to support her and I couldn't :(. @karenvanmil, you are amazing, supportive, strong and I couldn't have done it without you! ❤️544
🙏 thank you @edwonian for precepting me. We had some fun times, frustrating times where I felt like I made a mistake and could do this and times of immense learning and growth. You broke it down, kept on me to improve and gave me strategies constantly self reflect and always find ways to be better and find improved ways to treat my patients. I wouldn't be where I am today with your wisdom patience and experience; thank you!!! 🙏thank you @i_carter78 I had the pleasure of learn long a ton with you as your partner over all these years that helped me to enter this program. Then I was lucky enough to return to your for my consolidation. I hope I can be half the medic you are. I have learned a ton with you these last few months and you pushed me from "I think" to "I know". We've become great friends over these years and I hope for that to continue even though I may be moving to a different platoon. Thank also for all the help and work you put in on the sidelines for me this past year! First off thank you everyone for the support, words of encouragement and donations! I was honestly worried about this race because of my lack of training but it was, surprisingly, much better than I thought! I ran it on intervals of 11:1 and tried to maintain a 9:30 min/mile and I met my goal of under 1hr30mins! Already looking forward to next year!

@oakley My #flatrunner for tomorrow's @raceforkidsto 15k. Thanks again to all those that donated so far! There's still time to donate as well! Check out my profile for the link! You'd be helping a ton of kids get hooked up with the resources they need! 🏃Race kit days are fun!🏃 :) @raceforkidsto may be tomorrow morning but there's still time to make a donation and help some kids! The link is in my profile! :) This has not been a great year for me to get out and get runs logged. I forced myself to get out tonight after two long days at work with shift overrun overtime. Mentally I think I needed it. I also have the @raceforkidsto 15k coming up this weekend and I wanted to get a handle of where I was at. While I am not happy with my level of training and fitness I know I'll be able to complete this race. This race is important to me and I run it every year because of the great things it does for our youth! The program your donations support assists youth to navigate the very complicated mental health system. Youth suffering with mental health problems is something I see at work frequently and, unfortunately, more and more every shift. Your donations go a long way to helping these kids. Huge thank you to those of you who have donated already! If you would like to make a donation in my name the link is in my IG profile. The @raceforkidsto is now officially sold out! There is still tons of time to donate and help some kids though!
