Recently I posted on facebook asking for your best tips on long distance driving with kids!
Along with the typical jokes (leaving the kids behind and or drugging them lol) I received a lot of great tips! I was actually quite surprised at the amount of comments that this post received! Some from people that I am currently not even facebook friends with. So for that I thank you all for taking the time to offer your suggestions!
Summarizing them all, my top tip would have to be to make up grab bags for each kid with different activities like colouring, crafts, books and little toys/games. These bags can be personalized for each child based on their individual likes and personalities. One of them I liked that I had never thought of was printing off maps of the route for each child so they can keep track of the progress with notes and pictures of the things they liked and saw (I plan on doing a lot of the driving at night so this my not work so well for this trip) Movies, ipods and handheld gaming is always a good option and came up frequently. I also really liked the idea of incorporating play for the rest breaks! It will definitely help to stretch out tight muscles and break up the mental fatigue of the mundane task of sitting in a car fr 20hrs. Something that can be hard for a child for even a 1hr trip!
As a follow up to this I would now like to know you best tips for saving money on big long drives. What are the cheap gas stations, best hotels (if we decide to stop). Are there better routes that end up being faster or avoid traffic? I’ve been told to take the Detroit route which will bring us through Atlanta but to avoid going through Atlanta during rush hour. Do you have a favourite place to eat that’s good and or cheap?
I love to hear from you! put your suggestions down in the comment or comment on this post within facebook.
Thanks for reading and #KeepSmilin 🙂
