11 Tips for a Fitter Vacation – Travel Tuesday #TT

I’ll be running a 5k and 1/2 marathon on my vacation in Nov hopefully that’s enough to work off the extra calories! However I’ll be doing it at the beginning of my trip so does that mean I’ll be in a negative balance for my calorie bank for the rest of the week? :p

Summer is officially here!

Vacation, staycation, or just having some time off, enjoy your summer.bigstockphoto_Vacation_1791395

I get busy helping clients just before summer with so many people who want support with a diet plan or those that want to amp up their exercise program before their vacation. Then they go crazy in a buffet line or at the bar and return home with the post vacation belly blues.  Don’t let the vacation belly blues cloud your memories of a great time away!

Here are some quick tips for a fitter vaycay:

1.) Fuel up properly.

Eat before you go to the airport and pack some snacks. If travelling by car, pack your cooler bag so you are not stopping for quick eats on the highway. Not only will you have better control on your nutrition, it will also save you money that can be better spent on memories.

2.) Experience…

Happy National Running Day — 10 Reasons to Run, even if you don’t like running!

Happy National Running Day!

Yes, this is a day to celebrate!

I like running…weird, I know. I like to run for so many reasons and at the same time it makes me crazy because I just want to be a better runner and that doesn’t come easy. Time + training = better runner.

Running is not effortless for me, it’s hard.  I have to always remind myself to check my form/posture, be aware of my breathing, make sure my shoulders are not up by my ear lobes, look at my feet to make sure I’m not getting lazy and start to pronate.

Running keeps it real for me.

Somedays you run and feel incredible and somedays those runs are tough and terrible and it takes more mental work to keep going than physical work to stay going.

Running is a metaphor for life….you can always improve.

So why did I choose to run @RBCRun4theKids 15k?

Continuing on my running journey I have chosen to run the RBC Run for the Kids 15km distance.  I chose this race and distance for a few resons.  First I felt 15km was the perfect distance for me having just started running at the beginning of this year.  Second the money rasied from this race benfits the Family Navigation Project at Sunnybrook Hopsital.  As a Paramedic I too often see the impact of mental health issues on youth.  I hear many stories from them and their families of the difficulties of tying to find their way through the health care system.  They frequently become frustrated and lose thier drive to get better due to a lack of education in a very confusing system.  They often simply just dont know where to start!  Cue the Family Navigation project at Sunnybrook Health Sciences center.

This program fills a very large gap in the mental health care system!   However it cannot function without donations from wonderful people like you!  Last year the RBC Run for the Kids  raised $1.2 million to help young people get back on track to a brighter future.

So how can you help?

You can sponsor a runner or family/group.

Even better I be really really happy if you would sponsor me!

Come out to the event and cheer me and the other runners on!  They have a great kids zone planned

RUN with me 😀 in the 15km run, or the 5km run/walk/stroll or the 25km run.  If you’re new to running I will always offer advice from my experience as well as lots and lots of encouragement!  If you would like some training plans and tips check this out as well

Thanks for reading and I hope to meet you on September 20th Mel Lastman Square!

MT Albert Fire Dept. looking for EMS & fire patches to rebuild collection

Image

Recently the Mt Albert Fire department’s volunteer hall was destroyed by fire.  Along with all the departments fire apparatus the service lost all of its historical pieces including its collection of EMS and fire patches.  These collections can be quite large for some departments and can take a long time and a lot of effort to acquire.  The fire hall for fire-fighters especially the volunteer guys hold a very special place in their hearts.  There is currently an effort under-way to help rebuild this collection.  If have extra patches laying around for your EMS or Fire service and are willing to ship them they would most appreciative.

Those interested in helping out can email griffy39@gmail.com to arrange delivery.

Thank you and please share through out your networks.
