Constructive Criticism for my Blog

So I am still new to the blogging thing and haven’t blogged much (I am sure i just need practice) but I really do not like the layout and feel of the current theme I am using.  I am happily now accepting constructive criticism.  Thanks in advance

Buckles is on the move again!

I am a former lifeguard and swim instructor I know first hand the benefits of life jackets and water safety. Please give your kids the gift of being able to swim and the knowledge oh how to be safe around the water. Get your children into swimming lessons! You can and should start them at 4 months. This is the best time to start them as they are very comfortable in the water and you get are with them! (Its a great bonding experience between parent and baby as i found out from bringing my own two children). My two have been in lessons at every opportunity (excluding the summers when it gets busy in the van Mil house) even redoing certain levels because they just weren’t old enough to advance; just to keep them in the water and learning those life saving swimming skills. Nothing replaces parental supervision of your children around all bodies of water ( a child can drown in a little as 15″ of water) but you can at least buy yourself some time when you do see them fall in or in trouble.

Keep safe and have fun around the water like it should be 🙂

if you ever see an oversized lifejacket walking around your community, you’ll know Buckles is in town!

Buckles is the Canadian Red Cross mascot for water safety. He gets around the country quite a bit too. He’s been to Timmins, ON; last summer he did a road show in Atlantic Canada; he golfed in Calgary and visited Peggy’s Cove in Nova Scotia. He even got to pose with Snoop Dogg (well, not really — we photoshopped Snoop’s head in there).

This summer, we took Buckles to meet our friends in the Moose Cree First Nations community in Northern Ontario. Buckles was a hit up there!

At the Red Cross, we love Buckles because he reminds all of us – kids and adults – how important it is to wear lifejackets and stay safe while having fun in and around the water.

Would you like to see Buckles in…

Introducing the Disaster Preparedness Calculator App

Have you tried this yet? Let me know what you think 🙂

Janice Babineau, East Coast blogger, @JaniceBabineau's avatarRed Cross Talks

Are you prepared for a disaster? Not sure? Well, there’s an app for that!

Check out our new disaster preparedness calculator app created with the support of the Red Cross’ leading corporate partner, Walmart.

Using this Facebook app is easy: just drag and drop the items you already have and the app will calculate how prepared you are according to how many adults, children, and pets are in your home. The calculator will generate a list of items you need to build your own emergency preparedness kit to help you and your family stay safe for 72 hours in the event of a disaster. After reviewing the items to include in your kit, the list can be downloaded to help make shopping for your items easier.

In the event of an emergency or disaster, it could take emergency responders several days to reach your home and there may be certain situations where you…

Twitter Jail (is social media reliable in an emergency)

Tim Burrows's avatarWalking the Social Media Beat

From the onset of the flood warnings in Alberta I have had search terms and monitoring in place to follow along from a safe, dry distance. From the beginning, the Calgary Police Service has been nothing short of awesome to watch!Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 6.50.49 PM

They have been on the ball broadcasting information, sharing information, answering questions providing links to more information and going at it on a full speed setting. At the time of writing, Calgary Police have tweeted 44 times in the last hour.

But, they have paid the price for providing all this information…Twitter Jail.  That’s right folks, the police have been sent to jail.  But, not to fear, they have more than one account in Calgary and one of their members jumped in and started tweeting on behalf of the big account.Screen shot 2013-06-21 at 7.04.38 PM

The best definition of Twitter Jail comes from Urban Dictionary,
