Run Walk Ride with me at the @HSFRide this year & let’s #CreateSurvivors together!

Did you know:

Heart disease and stroke kill one Canadian every 7 minutes, making it a leading cause of death and disability in Canada.

Today, more than 90 per cent of Canadians who have a heart attack and more than 80 per cent who have a stroke and make it to hospital will survive. Last year, the Heart and Stroke Foundation helped create 165,000 survivors.

As a Paramedic I, far to often, see the devastating effects of these two conditions on my patients and their families.  So when I was asked to be an ambassador for the all new run component of the Becel Heart and Stroke Ride for Heart I agreed without hesitation.

This year they have a goal to raise $6.8million.  Funds rasied will support world class research as well as health education and advocacy to help the Foundation meet its mission to prevent disease, save lives and promote recovery from heart disease and stroke.  I plan on doing everything I can to help them meet that goal!  But I need your help by either joining me or donating!

If you’d like to participate with me, then free up your calendar on June 5th for this unique opportunity to ride, run or walk on a traffic-free Gardiner and DVP, help create more survivors from heart disease and stroke.  Join 15,000 cyclists and ride 25, 50 or 75km traffic-free on the Gardiner and Don Valley Parkway. Or participate in our new 5km/10km Run or 5km Walk. It’s a whole new way to experience the magic of this landmark Toronto event.

Your selfie game will be strong with a backdrop like this!

By supporting the Ride you will be helping to create more survivors.  Over the past 60 years, with the Foundation’s help, the death rate from heart disease and stroke has declined by more than 75 per cent, with nearly 40 per cent of this decrease occurring in the past decade.

By deciding to participate and train for this event you will also be taking charge of your own health and help to prevent a cardiac event or stroke from occurring to yourself!  Lack of physical activity is a risk factor for heart disease and stroke, and cycling/running/walking is a great example of a physical activity that is fun and easy to do.   It is recommended that Canadians get 150 minutes of moderate- to vigorous-physical activity each week so get signed up and start training!  Here are some other videos to help motivate you!

🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑🚑Well after a little more than 10 months it's time for this little birdie to leave the nest and fly on his own! It's been a long process with many ups and downs. 🙏❤️huge thanks to my wife who was still recovering from major surgery and was basically a single mom right up to Christmas while I was attending the in-class portion. She encouraged me, supported me and kept everything at home and with the kids running smoothly. Then during my clinical and preceptorship phase we had to deal with the illness and eventual passing of her father. There were many times where I needed to be with her to support her and I couldn't :(. @karenvanmil, you are amazing, supportive, strong and I couldn't have done it without you! ❤️544
🙏 thank you @edwonian for precepting me. We had some fun times, frustrating times where I felt like I made a mistake and could do this and times of immense learning and growth. You broke it down, kept on me to improve and gave me strategies constantly self reflect and always find ways to be better and find improved ways to treat my patients. I wouldn't be where I am today with your wisdom patience and experience; thank you!!! 🙏thank you @i_carter78 I had the pleasure of learn long a ton with you as your partner over all these years that helped me to enter this program. Then I was lucky enough to return to your for my consolidation. I hope I can be half the medic you are. I have learned a ton with you these last few months and you pushed me from "I think" to "I know". We've become great friends over these years and I hope for that to continue even though I may be moving to a different platoon. Thank also for all the help and work you put in on the sidelines for me this past year! First off thank you everyone for the support, words of encouragement and donations! I was honestly worried about this race because of my lack of training but it was, surprisingly, much better than I thought! I ran it on intervals of 11:1 and tried to maintain a 9:30 min/mile and I met my goal of under 1hr30mins! Already looking forward to next year!

@oakley My #flatrunner for tomorrow's @raceforkidsto 15k. Thanks again to all those that donated so far! There's still time to donate as well! Check out my profile for the link! You'd be helping a ton of kids get hooked up with the resources they need! 🏃Race kit days are fun!🏃 :) @raceforkidsto may be tomorrow morning but there's still time to make a donation and help some kids! The link is in my profile! :) This has not been a great year for me to get out and get runs logged. I forced myself to get out tonight after two long days at work with shift overrun overtime. Mentally I think I needed it. I also have the @raceforkidsto 15k coming up this weekend and I wanted to get a handle of where I was at. While I am not happy with my level of training and fitness I know I'll be able to complete this race. This race is important to me and I run it every year because of the great things it does for our youth! The program your donations support assists youth to navigate the very complicated mental health system. Youth suffering with mental health problems is something I see at work frequently and, unfortunately, more and more every shift. Your donations go a long way to helping these kids. Huge thank you to those of you who have donated already! If you would like to make a donation in my name the link is in my IG profile. The @raceforkidsto is now officially sold out! There is still tons of time to donate and help some kids though!
