Avi Auction

Well Movember is fast approaching and few months back I had this idea. What if I auctioned off my Avi to the highest bidder? Now this all started from a Twitter conversation between myself, my work partner @jods10503 and @ifyouseekkatie. You see they were daring me to change my avi to a photoshoped image the two of them had created. I never did change my avi for them but it did get me thinking. If people would be that anxious and excited for me to change my avi to something silly they created for a laugh then maybe I can harness this for a bigger cause.

FYI: an “AVI”, or avitar is the nickname given to the profile pic on a Social Media (SM) site. (more…)

Amanda Todd

I would like you all to watch this. it is a very profound video. This is the face of bullying. This is the effects of bullying. A beautiful girl taken from this world way to early. I debated posting this but I feel her story needs to be told … And retold. She made this video to be an inspiration. She wanted to show the effects of bullying. She wanted to show she was strong. No child; nobody; should ever have to go through the torment she went through in her life.
We all owe it to her to make a change! Talk to your kids, nieces, nephews, grandkids, and friends. Tell them to stand up for good! Report bullying. Take a stand for victims don’t expect someone else will do it. Be a leader.

Amanda Todd I will always remember you!

Tim Burrows's avatarWalking the Social Media Beat

On Tuesday, October 9th, 2012, the Canadian Red Cross released a survey that they conducted with Ipsos Reid to gauge how we feel about social media and they work that is done by them, social media and being prepared.

The results, while not earth shattering to anyone who has been keeping tabs on disaster response, emergency management and education / awareness, have some very interesting results.

There is no doubt that in an emergency, people will turn to social media to talk about, learn about and share their experiences when disaster or emergencies strike.  That is the new normal when it comes to information, due in part to the immediacy and availability of information in real-time and the research supports this:

“A majority (54%) of Canadians would use social media channels  such as Facebook or Twitter to let their friends and family know that they are safe in the event of an emergency”
