New to running? So am I! Here’s what keeps me going!

So I was running on the treadmill today and got to thinking about my goals, why I run and how I stay motivated being new to this. This is going to be directed at those like me who are new or thinking about getting into running. I already gotten into some of the benefits that I’ve noticed in a previous post so I won’t get into that here.
Today I want to focus on motivation and how I am able to keep at it in the hopes I can help some of you do the same!

First and foremost what you need and what did/does it for me is to have a goal! Now you and I being new it is best to pick a goal that you will reach 6 or so months down the road. For me I chose the @RunDisney #WinedineHalf in Nov. This is a half marathon (13.1 miles) that runs through mine and my families favorite place to be: Walt Disney world. For you it can be anything a race, weight loss change of body shape etc. Just pick something that’s important to you and allow yourself enough time to reach it!

The second thing I’ve found that has been a huge help is to surround yourself with others that have similar interests and goals! People that will cheer you on and encourage you! For me it’s been a huge help to have my wife @karenvanmil running the same race as well. SM is reall big for me as I’m sure you know so I try to follow people and accounts that inspire encourage and check in on me and my progress! When you know people are in your corner and are following your progress it’s a huge help! Avoid the people that will get in the way of your goal. There will be people that will tell you not to post stuff about exercising and getting healthy you need to ignore them. Follow me I’ll encourage and support you! Follow @carrieburrows she’s was my first supporter and continues to as well. She is also a wealth of knowledge on how to get to where you wan to me check out her blog there is a whole library of information and inspiration there!

The next thing that really helps me in the short term for each run is a good music playlist! I saw some where (don’t have the link) that music at least 120 beats/min helps you to run faster. It may not be music you typically listen to but trust me, put on some upbeat dance pop or rap and you’ll forget you’re even running! There are a vast amount of music playlist/players out there for smartphones. I and currently using @Songza it has the biggest and best playlist and truly multi-platform even on the web!

The last thing I use on run is visualization. I picture myself actually running the half marathon in Disney and how it will feel when my wife and I cross that finish line together! Picture what you will look like with extra weight gone, how your body will look when you get it where you want it or just how much better you will feel overall!

And finally I leave you with my two favorite hashtags:

#Runstrong
#KeepSmilin

Thanks for reading and please do let me know how it goes for you! I’d love to hear from you and help you along with words or encouragement! πŸ™‚

πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘πŸš‘Well after a little more than 10 months it's time for this little birdie to leave the nest and fly on his own! It's been a long process with many ups and downs. πŸ™β€οΈhuge thanks to my wife who was still recovering from major surgery and was basically a single mom right up to Christmas while I was attending the in-class portion. She encouraged me, supported me and kept everything at home and with the kids running smoothly. Then during my clinical and preceptorship phase we had to deal with the illness and eventual passing of her father. There were many times where I needed to be with her to support her and I couldn't :(. @karenvanmil, you are amazing, supportive, strong and I couldn't have done it without you! ❀️544
πŸ™ thank you @edwonian for precepting me. We had some fun times, frustrating times where I felt like I made a mistake and could do this and times of immense learning and growth. You broke it down, kept on me to improve and gave me strategies constantly self reflect and always find ways to be better and find improved ways to treat my patients. I wouldn't be where I am today with your wisdom patience and experience; thank you!!! πŸ™thank you @i_carter78 I had the pleasure of learn long a ton with you as your partner over all these years that helped me to enter this program. Then I was lucky enough to return to your for my consolidation. I hope I can be half the medic you are. I have learned a ton with you these last few months and you pushed me from "I think" to "I know". We've become great friends over these years and I hope for that to continue even though I may be moving to a different platoon. Thank also for all the help and work you put in on the sidelines for me this past year! First off thank you everyone for the support, words of encouragement and donations! I was honestly worried about this race because of my lack of training but it was, surprisingly, much better than I thought! I ran it on intervals of 11:1 and tried to maintain a 9:30 min/mile and I met my goal of under 1hr30mins! Already looking forward to next year!

@oakley My #flatrunner for tomorrow's @raceforkidsto 15k. Thanks again to all those that donated so far! There's still time to donate as well! Check out my profile for the link! You'd be helping a ton of kids get hooked up with the resources they need! πŸƒRace kit days are fun!πŸƒ :) @raceforkidsto may be tomorrow morning but there's still time to make a donation and help some kids! The link is in my profile! :) This has not been a great year for me to get out and get runs logged. I forced myself to get out tonight after two long days at work with shift overrun overtime. Mentally I think I needed it. I also have the @raceforkidsto 15k coming up this weekend and I wanted to get a handle of where I was at. While I am not happy with my level of training and fitness I know I'll be able to complete this race. This race is important to me and I run it every year because of the great things it does for our youth! The program your donations support assists youth to navigate the very complicated mental health system. Youth suffering with mental health problems is something I see at work frequently and, unfortunately, more and more every shift. Your donations go a long way to helping these kids. Huge thank you to those of you who have donated already! If you would like to make a donation in my name the link is in my IG profile. The @raceforkidsto is now officially sold out! There is still tons of time to donate and help some kids though!
